Restaurant Review: Sono

I paid the folks at Sono a quick visit last week to see if they could handle Gluten Free patrons. They told me that they do stock Gluten Free soy sauce and can make special requests as needed and have done so for Gluten Free diners before without any issues. I felt pretty good about coming back for lunch.
When I arrived, I asked my waiter what Gluten Free options they had. They do not have a GF menu and the waiter was not really sure what they could offer but did mention that they do have GF soy sauce. At that point, I got a little nervous and asked for either a manager or chef to speak with. The waiter quickly got a chef for me to talk to. The chef was very confident he could make me a safe GF meal and asked me what I would like to eat. I told him that before going GF, I had eaten their Grilled Salmon lunch entree and really liked it. He noted that the dish was made with wheat based soy sauce so he'd have to make me a special order and redo everything with GF soy sauce but that it would not be a problem. In addition, he mentioned that the house fried rice also contained wheat based soy sauce so he would make me a GF version of that as well. The dish also comes with steamed veggies which did not need any modifications. I requested that he pan sear/fry my salmon instead of grilling it and he said that would not be an issue.
My order was a slight modification of the lunch shokado bentos - grilled salmon (spicy teriyaki) and it was delicious. You can see their menu here - I have a feeling they could have easily modified other menu items to be GF as well. The portion size was great for lunch and included GF fried rice, GF steamed veggies (2 servings to replace the tempura roll) and of course the salmon. I will definitely go back to this spot for lunch or dinner in the future. FYI - I have been emailed by a few readers letting me know they also had a good experience at Sono.

Restaurant Review: Posta Tuscan Grille

Upon entering (the hotel and restaurant are beautiful by the way), I asked to speak with a chef about their possible Gluten Free options. Within a few minutes, a chef appeared and let me know they could definitely make me something Gluten Free for lunch. I inquired some more about the options, what they included and how they were prepared. I eventually settled on the following...
* Pan seared/fried Filet Mignon
* Baked potato
* Steamed greens
* Dessert - fresh fruit cup
The meal was very yummy (Filet usually is though) but I was impressed by the communication between the chef and waitress. She mentioned that she spoke directly with the chef about my meal and he went over everything with her as well. She then passed it along to me for reassurance. I only had to make a few small changes to the normal menu item which weren't too hard. Instead of grilling, I had the chef pan fry. Instead of mashed potatoes, I had a baked potato. The greens were already Gluten Free and had not seasoning other than salt, pepper and garlic.
Overall, I had a pretty good lunch experience. The restaurant was not that full so maybe that helped. I'd go back to Posta in the future even though they don't offer a Gluten Free menu and didn't have very many choices. The food was quality and very tasty.

Gluten Free Beer: RedBridge @ The Pour House
The Pour House is a friendly neighborhood type bar that hosts live music most nights of the week and has pool tables upstairs on it's second floor. And, many of you may already be aware, but the Pour House is always open when something is happening at Moore Square. At events like Artsplosure you can get beers in to-go cups and walk out into the afternoon sun onto the blocked off streets to enjoy the music and art and street performers. There are the other events such as SparkCon and the First Friday Art Walks, where many people are out and about but celiacs who wish to have a drink are limited to only wine (which is fine!) But, now with a bar right on Moore Square, we can stop in for a Red Bridge and continue on our way!The Pour House

Restaurant Review: Sitti - Downtown Raleigh
I had not previously been to Sitti and really didn't have the chance to preview their menu or call ahead like I normally do. I was under the assumption that we were going somewhere else for lunch - oh well. Regardless, upon entering, I did my normal routine of asking the hostess for a manager and/or chef to speak with about my Gluten Free requirements. Within a few minutes, I met with Todd Henderson - Sitti's General Manager.
Todd kindly walked me through what was safe for me on their regular menu. A few minor modifications had to be made but overall the process was a lot easier than other places I have been. He knew every ingredient on the menu which really put me at ease. I ended up with the following for lunch...
Chicken Kabob – tender pieces of marinated chicken grilled on skewers served with garlic whip. Served with Sitti rice, sumac, onion and grilled tomato. $7.99
I immediately questioned the "marinated" part of the description in which Todd then explained the ingredients - all GF. I also asked about the garlic whip - again everything GF. I mentioned to Todd that I was not comfortable with the meal being prepared on a shared grill - he indicated that the meal would be sauteed in a fresh pan by itself - excellent! He then brought up the fact that their Sitti rice indeed had wheat noodles in it. He suggested substituting the Sitti House Salad – romaine, cucumber, tomato, red onion, mint, parsley with olive oil and lemon juice - instead.
Todd also went on to say that he would prepare the kitchen staff on the Gluten Free requirement of my meal and personally check it on as it made it's way through the kitchen. These gestures definitely made me more relaxed about my meal. My meal came out and no mistakes were made - everything just as we had agreed. Others around me ordered the same dish and I could definitely tell my chicken was not cooked on the grill like theirs.
Overall, I really enjoyed the meal at Sitti. It basically turned into a kind of Chicken Kabob salad but the taste was excellent. After the meal, I again approached Todd to thank him for his efforts and to let him know I was pleased with my Gluten Free dining experience. I went on to mention who I was and what I did (this blog) and he became very interested in learning more about Celiac Disease and the Gluten Free Diet. Apparently, Sitti has had quite a few Gluten Free requests and have had to learn quickly about the meal preparation. Sitti seems very open to working with me to create a Gluten Free menu and to get more information about the NFCA's GREAT program. Read this post to learn more about the GREAT program and this post about me becoming a GREAT Guide.

Restaurant Review: 18 Seaboard - Downtown Raleigh
I called a few days in advance to inquire about their Gluten Free options (as I always do). I was told over the phone in a very confident manner that they indeed could accommodate my special diet. I tried to get more specifics over the phone as to what exactly I could eat but was instead told how they serve people with food allergies quite often and never have any issues.
I decided to show up a little early for the lunch (something else I always do) to talk over the menu in more depth. I spoke with my server and went over the menu. It was recommended that I try the Cracklin’ pork shank with blue cheese grits, spinach, and cantaloupe compote. I began asking some more questions about the meal once I saw blue cheese was included (some blue cheese is made from molded bread). They could switch out the blue cheese grits with cheddar grits. Then I asked how the pork was prepared & cooked. Turns out it is indeed cooked in the same pan which also cooks up other flour laced entrees. Good thing I asked. FYI - I was told that many other people who desired GF options have been served this in the past. Not good.
The server then went back to the chef (I asked to talk to the chef on several occasions but did not get the chance until after lunch) to inquire about other options. He returned with the option of fresh shrimp & asparagus over cheddar grits - this was also listed on the menu. I was told no modifications would be needed. I asked again how the shrimp and asparagus were prepared/cooked and was told "grilled". Another red flag for me is when my food is cooked on a grill. It is always a good idea to request your food to be cooked in a newly cleaned pan or broiled on a newly cleaned pan in the oven instead of on the grill where cross contamination is likely. I asked for my food prepared this way.
Long story short, the food was great. I really enjoyed the shrimp and grits together as it is not something that I usually eat. By the way, the grits were made from corn and I was told their supplier avoided cross contamination issues. It took a little while to figure everything out but this is something that is pretty usual for me - hence why I go early.
The moral to the story is that I am almost more weary of places that seem very confident and say they serve diners with dietary restrictions "all the time". From my experience, not very many people (let alone chefs and waitstaff) in this area are actually familiar with preparing Gluten Free meals. One place may have the ingredients part nailed but might be weak on the cross contamination issues. It is always better to ask a lot of questions until you feel safe.
I'd like to give a special thanks to the owner/chef, management and waitstaff of 18 Seaboard for taking the time to work with me during my dining experience. I had the opportunity to talk to the owner/chef Jason Smith after my meal. During this conversation, I raised the issue of being recommended items that were not actually Gluten Free. We discussed numerous things in our conversation and they were very open to improving their processes. Part of the issue with cooking Gluten Free is that most chefs don't do it every day. It is easy to forget everything that is included in the GF Diet when you don't practice it everyday. Hopefully, I can work with places like 18 Seaboard in the future to help them more easily provide GF options.

Restaurant Review: Cooper's Barbeque - Downtown Raleigh
I finally got up the nerve to go ask Cooper's about their food and was pleasantly surprised to learn that their BBQ is indeed GF. They use a safe vinegar and none of the other ingredients on their pork BBQ or BBQ chicken contains gluten. Obviously you will need to stay away from the hush puppies and fries (not a dedicated fryer). Some of their sides are also GF - Collard Greens, Steamed Cabbage, Corn & Butter beans (I call these lima beans), Boiled Potatoes and Potato Salad.
Cooper's is located in Downtown Raleigh at 109 East Davie Street (1 block east of Fayetteville Street) and is open Monday - Saturday from 10am - 6pm. Cooper's phone number is 919-832-7614 if you want to call and ask them questions about their menu.

Restaurant Review - Cafe Luna - Downtown Raleigh
We worked together to order the following with general ease...
-Broiled Salmon fillet (butter, salt & pepper)
-Pan cooked broccoli (olive oil, salt)
The above items were prepared with small modifications (broiled or pan cooked instead of grilled) from standard lunch menu items.
The meal was excellent and came out at the exact same time as all other members of my party (I've had problems with this in the past). I would highly recommend Cafe Luna to those desiring a nice romantic dinner or just lunch.

Restaurant Review - Prime Only Steakhouse & Sushi Bar - Downtown Raleigh
Last night we visited Prime Only Steakhouse & Sushi Bar in Downtown Raleigh's Powerhouse Square. Prime Only goes for that Ruth's Chris or Morton's Steakhouse level and it did not disappoint.
We actually visited The Rat Pack Lounge which is a separate area from the main restaurant but they both share the same kitchen. We were lucky enough to take in the sounds of Joe Amato who is a dead ringer (voice wise) of Mr. Frank Sinatra. The dinner & a show (called Fly me to the Moon - a musical tribute to Frank Sinatra) was put on in conjunction with the North Carolina Theatre and was a great time. See this link for more information about the show if you are interested (it runs through October 11th).
I was concerned at first because the menu was a set 3 course meal - as described on the NC Theatre website - "a salad, your choice of a filet, salmon or chicken with a side of potato and vegetable, and dessert." Doesn't provide a ton of description does it? Of course my strategy was to call ahead (before I bought the non-refundable tickets) and speak with a manager and/or chef. They stated over the phone that all of their menu items are made fresh in house and can be customized to meet Gluten Free needs. We talked through the menu and ended up with the following...
*Salad - made fresh without croutons and with oil and vinegar dressing (Raspberry vinaigrette not safe). Croutons were added to other folks salads just before serving.
*Filet - salt & pepper seasoned only and broiled (not grilled).
*Baked potato with butter (replaced the mashed potatoes)
*Steamed veggies (peppers and green beans) with butter, salt & pepper
*Bowl of vanilla ice cream topped with fresh strawberries.
The original dessert was either chocolate or vanilla cheesecake - but they were more than happy to substitute for me. As is normal, my waiter wasn't the most helpful (I knew when he said "I think the dressing is ok") but I politely asked for the manager and or chef so that I could be 100% about ingredients. There is no "I think" statements allowed. We were pleasantly surprised when the owner actually came to our table and talked through the menu with us - a nice touch!
Overall, a great experience for the entire evening. It's nice to not be afraid to actually go and do things like other normal people. It just takes a little more effort to get what you need but you should always be able to have a good meal.

Some Updates
- I attended last night's Celiac Support Group meeting and met a ton of great people with a lot more Gluten Free experience than me. I hope to continue to learn from these folks, many of which have been doing this for a long, long time. I intend to post some meeting minutes so that the people who could not attend last night can still know what went on. More to come on that.
- I have been making some progress on finding Gluten Free items at Carolina Hurricanes home games at the RBC Center. The hockey season is quickly approaching. I have been in contact over the last few weeks with the Director of Food and Beverage as well as their Executive Chef. I will let you know more about what is decided for those of us who require/request Gluten Free food and beverage as soon as possible. At this point, things are looking pretty good for us!
- I have also been working on the folks at the NC State Fair which is coming up in a few weeks. In the past, this has been one of my favorite events to attend and I love the food. I estimate that I usually end up consuming somewhere around 7,000 calories in about a 2 hour period (yikes). At this point, I am trying to see if any vendors at the fair can claim to be Gluten Free. This will be a difficult maze to navigate, but many vendors have meat, vegetable, fruit or dessert items that have potential. The main concern here will be cross-contamination. I will let you know what I find out there. I am bummed to have to stay away from the elephant ears and fried snickers bars though - oh well. Maybe I can still get my London Broil sandwich, sans bun. UPDATE 9-20-08 @ 8AM - I heard from the folks at the NC State Fair this morning and they are currently in the process of querying their vendors about Gluten Free Items!
- Lastly, I am a formulating a strategy on how best to contact the many restaurants in the Raleigh area about their Gluten Free friendliness. I plan to start in the Downtown area where there are over 100 restaurants and then work my way out. I have come up with a Online Survey that can best gather this input to at least get the ball rolling. I intend to contact each place and share the feedback that I gather in the Survey. This may get information out a little quicker than everyone waiting for me to eat at each place. More to come on this definitely! UPDATE 9-20-08 @ 8AM - The first 40 surveys were emailed out to restaurants last night. I am starting to get some responses and will provide this feedback to you ASAP. For the other 60 restaurants Downtown, looks like I'll be pounding the pavement on those. Wish me luck!

Restaurant Review - Chic-fil-a - Downtown Raleigh
I have had experiences with them in the past (which were all good) but I had yet to post a review about them. Chic-fil-a does a nice job of communicating about Gluten on their website. Click here for their Gluten page. They have listed entrees, sides, beverages, desserts, dipping sauces, condiments, and breakfast items that are all Gluten Free. Unfortunately, their "entrees" are all salads, unless you count tortilla strips as an entree (I don't). I also don't count getting a chargrilled chicken sandwich without the bun as a GF choice either. It's a pet peeve of mine when people suggest that and you'll just get weird looks if you are sitting there eating a chicken breast with no bun. Plus, you would need to verify that the chicken actually never touched a bun (too risky).
Let's move onto the important things, like FRIES! Most places will put their fries in the same frying oil as other non-GF things like chicken fingers or nuggets so that means it's a no-go due to cross-contamination issues. Not Chic-fil-a, they have a dedicated fryer just for fries (FYI - I always ask about the dedicated fryer because I don't trust anyone).
Here is what I ordered this afternoon (and usually order). Total cost was around $8.
- Chargrilled Chicken Garden Salad with Italian dressing (make sure you read the dressing labels also)
- Waffle Potato Fries (yummy) with Barbecue dipping sauce
- Dr. Pepper

Restaurant Review - Rosie's Plate - Downtown Raleigh
Rosie's Plate opened this summer in Downtown Raleigh (ironically next to Krispy Kreme donuts - argh) as a completely Gluten Free kitchen which specializes in prepared meals. As I mentioned before, this is technically not a restaurant. You can order prepared meals online (Click Here) or by phone or fax from a menu which rotates every 2 weeks. At this point, you must order the day before you would like your food but they will have it warm for you to pick up the next day (Orders placed on Friday, Saturday and Sunday will be ready on Monday). On all 3 occasions, I have picked up my food warm and taken it home to eat with my family. The food stayed warm during my 20 minute drive home and didn't need reheated. They also have the option of picking the food up cold and cooking it yourself.
The menu (completely gluten, shellfish, and peanut-free) consists of a variety of entrees, salads, side dishes, snacks and desserts. Rosie's is now on their 5th menu - click here. There are usually 5-6 entrees and sides (purchased separately), soups, salads, breads, snacks and 8-10 dessert choices.
Rosie's also offers a lunch-to-go menu. While I have not tried this option yet, I anticipate giving it a shot in the near future. My work usually requires a lot of large meetings in which food is usually provided. Most organizers do not take into consideration that employees might have food allergies and as a result there is usually nothing for me to eat. I could see Rosie's filling the void here.
At this time, the only pitfalls of Rosie's Plate are that they do not deliver and they do not have pizza on the menu EVERY week! I have spoken with them about this and they mentioned they hear this feedback all the time and are making plans to rectify these items. If you would like to give input to the folks at Rosie's, please go to their website and click the "New Visitors, please fill out our survey" link at the bottom left part of the home page to let them know what you are thinking. I would also encourage you to call Rosie's and speak with Emily Ellis the Customer Service Manager.
Here is a listing of the items I ordered the 3 times I have eaten at Rosie's.
June 2008
-Tangy Bar-B-Q Chicken Breast $8.50
-Tuscan Grilled Pork Kabob with Vidalia Onions $7.50
-Organic Roasted New Potatoes with Thyme $3.25
-Green beans sauteed in olive oil with garlic $3.00

-Brown Rice Penne Pasta with Cream of Red Bell Pepper Sauce $5.50
-Organic Potato and Corn Chowder $4.00
-Yellow squash and zucchini $3.00
-Organic Roasted New Potatoes with Thyme $3.25
-4 Frosted Chocolate Cupcakes(Chocolate Sprinkles & Chocolate Frosting) $9.50
Total Cost $36.37
August 2008
-Terrific Chicken Bites w/Honey Mustard sauce $6.00

-Cuban Pork Tenderloin Medallions with Roasted Vegetable Salsa $8.50
-Spring rolls - Veggie filled with Spicy "Peanut" sauce $5.00
-6 pack of Sugar Cookies $6.00

My family and I have thoroughly enjoyed each time we order from Rosie's Plate. I would highly recommend and encourage all Celiac's or Gluten Free folks in the area to give Rosie's a try and let them know you support them. I have spoken with several folks at Rosie's and each time they are pleasant and grateful of my patronage. Their customer service is great and the food is always ready on time and kept warm in their lobby (in case you are running late).

Beer Update - Taz's - Downtown Raleigh
When Taz first opened the store at S Wilmington St/Hargett St, I stopped in to see if he carried Red Bridge Beer (it's Gluten Free and yummy). Of course he did not - bummer. However, I asked him about it and he said he would begin carrying it.
Low and behold, it's now stocked on the shelves! Thanks for keeping your word Taz.
It is a hefty $9.99 per sixer (normally $7.99) but hey it's there and convenient to those downtown.
***UPDATE - 9/11/2008 @ 11:00 AM ***
I just dropped in at Taz's this morning. They did have RedBridge still (a case) but it was located in a back cooler. In the future, if you don't see it by the other Budweiser products simply ask and they can go get it for you.
Taz also mentioned that he will soon be opening his 4th location Downtown that will feature fresh meats and produce along with a ready-to-eat grill to order option.

Restaurant Review - The Duck & Dumpling - Downtown Raleigh
When I entered, I immediately asked the Hostess if I could speak to a Manager and/or Chef about a food allergy. This is my typical plan of attack and most places are pretty good about it. This time the Hostess directed me to my Waitress. Not sure if there is not a Manager type around and I got the impression that the Chef would be hard to talk to due to his thick accent. This is usually NOT a good sign.
After a lengthy discussion with my waitress and her running back and forth to the kitchen several times, I finally got down to the only things I felt safe ordering. See below.
-EDAMAME HUMMUS Appetizer
-Cool SUMMER ROLLS Appetizer
-Water to drink
The waitress wasn't exactly sure of the ingredients in all cases and did not bring out ingredient containers for me to look over. I was a little concerned with a few of the recommendations she gave me because of this fact so that is why I was stuck eating 2 appetizers. I paid $12 plus tip and left hungry.
I would not recommend this place to other Celiacs unless you're willing to go through the above hassles.

Restaurant Review - The Pit - Downtown Raleigh
I usually do not try to eat at "new" places because I don't expect them to know how to cook everything "normal" yet let alone Gluten Free. But there was a work outing and I cannot usually turn down BBQ so I gave it a shot.
When I entered, I immediately asked the Hostess if I could speak to a Manager and/or Chef about a food allergy. This is my typical plan of attack and most places are pretty good about it. The Manager could not have been nicer about the whole GF thing and even brought out bottles for me to look at the ingredients. She spoke with the Chef and directed me that I would be safe ordering the following from the lunch menu.
-Chopped Whole Hog Plate
-Sides included Cole Slaw & Fruit Salad.
-Water to drink
She either explained to me or showed me the contents of each part of the above meal and I felt 99% confident that I would not get glutened (you can never be 100% unless you are making it yourself). We also discussed how the food was prepared (cross-contamination) and she again made me feel safe.
The meal was great, cost about $10 after tip and I did not feel any after effects.
I would recommend this place to any other Celiacs.
