GF Beer Update

I've spent some time in the past on this Blog talking about Gluten Free Beer. It's always a topic that comes up and I'm always looking for places carrying GF Beer or new varieties to try.

Here are some updates...
  1. A reader contacted me and let me know that Slim's Downtown Distillery in downtown Raleigh was now carrying RedBridge. I spoke with Joe who is the manager at Slim's and he did confirm that they began carrying it a few weeks ago and plan to permanently carry RedBridge. Slim's is located at 227 S. Wilmington Street. We already know that the Raleigh Times Bar also carries GF Beer. Anybody been to the Flying Saucer lately? I know they used to carry RedBridge and Bard's Tale. I'll check in with them and let you know.
  2. I conversed with MillerCoors (2nd largest brewer in the US) about the possibility of the brewer making Gluten Free Beer. They politely stated that they do not have any plans on brewing a GF Beer. RedBridge (and a few others) it is I guess. If you would like some more variety, contact them yourself to help encourage them a little.
  3. I also attempted to contact several other brewers including Yuengling and Boston Beer Company (Sam Adams). I have not heard anything back. I will let you know.
  4. I have in the past asked Raleigh brewer Big Boss about GF Beer and they said they were focused on expansion of current products but might consider it in the future.
  5. I have also in the past spoken with Holly Springs brewer Carolina Brewing Company (see the 2nd paragraph). They respectfully declined my invitation to make GF Beer that tasted like CPA. Bummer.
  6. The Carolina Hurricanes are still carrying RedBridge at the RBC Center! I plan to ask them at the end of the season how many bottles they sold - more to come.
If you have any GF Beer information you'd like to share, please leave a comment or email me. If you know of any places where you regularly buy your GF Beer, please leave a comment on the GF Products Review and Locator post.

Lowes Foods has had Red Bridge on 'sale' for $7.49 the last few weeks. The Lowes on Strickland Rd had a decent stock of it on hand last week.

Also, Annheuser-Busch (sp?) has a Red Bridge website that has a finder tool to find where it is served and sold in your area, which is real handy.

It mentioned that the new bar Ugly Monkey supposedly carries it.

I was at Flying Saucer last month and they still had Redbridge and New Grist GF beer. They were pushing for customer feedback and were using the coasters to tell people how to contact them with thoughts and comments. I wrote something thanking them for carrying GF beer and encouraging them to keep it up. I got a positive response from the manager pretty quickly, so they know their offerings are appreciated. I know Mitch's Tavern on Hillsborough across from NC State carried Redbridge and did so because one of the bartenders there was a celiac, but this was last April so I have no idea if they still carry it. Good news that more local bars are carrying GF beer though!

For Christmas, my wife special ordered Green's Discovery Amber Beer (www.glutenfreebeers.co.uk) from Harris Teeter. They were able to have the beer on hand within 48 hours. The only problem - it's quite expensive, at $9/pint. I have had several Green's varieties, and they are excellent.

Thanks Zach for all you are doing. I enjoy the blog!

Tim, did you know that Whole Foods carries 3 varieties of Green's beer? I agree, they are very good..and potent!

I was just at Humble Pie last night, and they have REDBRIDGE! I was so happy! Also, I have been asking at Village Draught House in Cameron Village, and it sounds like they are on the verge of adding a keg of a gluten free beer, possibly New Grist, so everyone go there and keep asking!

I was so excited to go to The Flying Saucer and have gluten free beer. However, trying to get information on which menu items were gluten free was very disappointing. Our waitress was not helpful at all and was in fact clueless and unwilling to help. I should have asked to talk to the manager, but I really didn't feel like dealing with it. I just ate smoked salmon and cheese on my contaminated plate that came with crackers. You would think that a place that sells gluten free beer would also offer food options for us celiacs...

We are regulars at Napper Tandy's, and asked them to carry Redbridge. They got it within a week and had it in stock the two times we have been there over the last two weeks.

The manager Paddy says he will continue to stock it.

However don't go to Napper Tandy's to eat, because almost every item on their menu has gluten in it...
